LOCATIE

INTERVIEW WITH SELLER

What’s the reason for selling the yacht?
We have sailed this comfortable and spacious Valkvlet with great pleasure for 28 years. Since the younger generation does not wish to take over the helm due to other hobbies, we have decided to sell the boat based on our age.
Where have you been sailing (sailing area)?
Before we bought the Valkvlet in 1997, the ship sailed on the Frisian lakes, the Wadden, the Baltic Sea and the Channel. That is why there is also a 2nd mast with a large (brown) support sail. We have mainly sailed on the Dutch inland waters, usually in an organised team.
Since when are you the owner of the yacht? How many owners?
Officially we are the 2nd owner because we bought the boat in 1997 at the shipyard of the Pikmeerkruiser, where it was traded in.
Has the yacht been without any accident?
The only damage we know of is our own damage to the roof at the passage under the Hoge Brug near Rotterdam, about 20 years ago. That bridge turned out not to be that high. The cause was the water dam of an approaching inland vessel. This led to the renewal of the teak water barrier in front of the sliding roof. The searchlight, ship's horn and loudhailer have also been replaced.
What can you tell about the sailing characteristics?
This long and slender Valkvlet runs fast, quiet and stable with its 12 meter waterline and large working propeller. A round bilge does want to roll but the long bilge keels dampen sufficiently. The DAF 575 diesel engine runs quietly with few revs. We sail on average at 1200 revs and that results in 5 to 6 knots. The engine noise is also adequately dampened by thick floor hatches and rubber-lined diesel tanks.
How is the yacht maintained, are there any invoices available concerning the maintenance?
From 1981 all maintenance up to and including the last major paint job in June/July 2024 can be checked. During the 28 years that we owned the ship, at least 4 major maintenance and painting jobs took place in the shed at the same shipyard in Leiden. Relatively major interventions were replacing the Eberspacher diesel heater (12/1997); installing a waste water tank with pumps, 8 Hora double-glazed (sliding) windows in 2017; in 2001 new teak decks with solid teak (thickness 1.8 and 2.1 cm thick entirely on Sikaflex. All bench and bunk cushions have also been replaced (new foam rubber and Sunbrella upholstery). In 2010 a 2-component polyurethane paint system was used, which was repeated in 2017 and 2024 (both superstructure and hull 2 times per service). In 2024, among other things, the wooden beams of the sliding roof were replaced.
Was the yacht regularly ashore during winterperiods? Every year?
This only happened during the major maintenance. Thanks to the closed cooling system (using a long box keel with coolant) we sailed on the Kaag almost every year, also in the winter, wonderfully comfortable thanks to the heater and the double glazing in the saloon.
What is the boat name and the (special) meaning of this name?
The Valkvlet was launched in 1981 as Wya Catharina but the previous owner had taken the nameplates with him. We wanted to name the boat after a water bird and since our Centaur sailboat was called Pijlstaart, we named the mothership De Wilde Eend. De Wilde eend turned out to be an original duck species.
Other remarks:
Of course we hope that De Wilde Eend will continue its tradition as a fantastic family ship. But the ship also invites you to wander through Europe because a long and very comfortable stay on board is certainly possible. The sliding roof gives the feeling of sailing. Its low clearance is a great advantage. And on the open water you can steer relaxed while sitting on the aft deck thanks to the Vetus remote control.
